DRAKENSBERGER
drakensberger in australia
Drakensberger cattle are a medium-frame beef animal with a long and deep body, mild temprament and smooth coat.. Unrelated to any breed in the world today the Drakensberger is the culmination of the development process through strict selection, based on scientific norms. The breed has been developed over hundreds of years to perform under harsh conditions. The history of this extremely hardy cattle is confirmed by the fact that it had to survive the Great Trek, a time during which no vaccines, antibiotics and tick remedies were available. The Drakensberger cattle breed was officially founded with the establishment of the South African Drakensberger Cattle Breeders’ Society on 7 November 1947.
Known as extremely hardy and adaptable, the Drakensberger has developed a natural resistance against tick-borne diseases. This was proven when they were herbed by Dutch-speaker settlers as they traveled across the country to new settlements, known as The Great Trek.
The Drakensberger has a very short sleek black coat which helps to repel insects that could cause infections or illness. Their coat also helps with the harsh sun. They have short powerful legs which makes steep and rocky terrain an ease.
